This is a very thoughtful essay. But remains unanswered is the level of the artist's knowledge of Latin. (and Greek, too) Perhaps he simply could not spell well. Additionally, I cannot see someone chopping out these beautiful letters in a few hours one dark night. If there any documentation that Michelangelo actually did this instead of some other person? How did he express his regret, as stated in the article?
